The Jolly Boatman and Hampton Court Station sites have been neglected for many years whilst a succession of development proposals have been brought forward.
The state of the two sites has attracted adverse comment in the national press and elsewhere, with development of the sites seen as the solution to the problem.
However the current poor state of the sites is a minor issue in comparison to the permanent harm caused to the setting of Hampton Court Palace and riverside if development is approved.
The dilemma of continued blight, on the one hand, and harmful encroaching development on the other, has to date proved incapable of resolution.
Previous development proposals have concentrated on the Jolly Boatman and Hampton Court Station sites themselves.
The current proposal considers a wider area, looking in particular the roundabout site on the opposite side of Hampton Court Way.
Next: historical development
